Amazon.com, (NASDAQ: AMZN) is an American e-commerce company based in Seattle, Washington. Founded in 1994 by Jeff Bezos, and launched in 1995, Amazon.com began as an online bookstore before diversifying its product lines by adding VHSs, DVDs, music CDs, MP3s, computer software, video games, electronics, apparel, furniture, food, toys, and more. Amazon has since established separate websites in Canada, the United Kingdom, Germany, Austria, France, China, and Japan.

Since starting out in his garage in Bellevue, Washington, Jeff Bezos has gone on to form one of the greatest ecommerce sites the internet has every seen. This is the story and history of Amazon.com as told through a timeline of events.

July- Amazon.com launches Associate Program. Amazon associates can place banner or text links on their site for individual books, or link directly to the Amazon home page.


May- Amazon announces IPO. Amazon starts trading on the NASDAQ stock exchange under the symbol AMZN at an IPO price of US$18.00 per share

September- Amazon introduces 1-ClickTM, allowing customers to make purchases online with one click.

November- Opens Fulfillment Center in New Castle, Delaware




February- Amazon launches Advantage Program

October- First International Sites are launched Amazon.co.uk (UK) and Amazon.de (Germany)

November- Opens DVD/Video Store


January- Opens Fulfillment Center in Fernley, Nevada

March- Amazon.com Auctions is launched
