Appeagle.com—2012 is coming to a close and according to a report by industry leader comScore, eCommerce had a monumental year. With more consumers using their computers, mobile devices and laptops to research products and make purchases, it seems that eCommerce is the industry to get behind as we move into the new year.
Increase in Holiday Shopping
In the first 51 days of the holiday shopping season consumers spent $38.7 billion, a 16% increase over the previous year. The most outstanding sales increase occurred on December 17th which was Free Shipping Day.
According to comScore’s report, the “Free Shipping Day,” saw a 76% increase when compared with last year’s results. That increase accounted for $1.01 billion in spending.
On December 21st, comScore reported that sales were still strong and showed a 53% growth rate in spending. comScore noted that this was a notable accomplishment for late season sales saying, “We typically do not see such heavy spending this late in the season, but the fact that Free Shipping Day occurred on a Monday, combined with the fact that so many retailers extended their promotions into the middle of the week – with guaranteed shipping by Christmas – helped deliver an encouraging late-season surge.” The report went on to say that, “The result has been a significant uptick in the season-to-date growth rate, which now stands at 16 percent.”
