January 23, 2013—Amazon can’t get enough of California. The Online Marketplace juggernaut announced today plans to open a third fulfillment center in California, making a total of three Fulfillment By Amazon facilities in the state. The new 1 million-square-foot fulfillment center will be located in Tracy, California with hundreds of full-time jobs with benefits being created. It join another new fulfillment center in San Bernardino, which opened its doors in October of 2012. Amazon is currently building a site in Patterson, CA that will open this summer.
“We are grateful to be members of the California business community and to employ so many hardworking and skilled Californians,” said Mike Roth, vice president of Amazon’s North American operations. “We are excited to be growing in the state and to be creating hundreds of full-time positions in Tracy.”
Although this is Amazon’s third fulfillment center in California, the Tracy facility will be different. It will contain a state-of-the-art automated technology fulfillment center that “will engage with high-end technology while fulfilling customer orders.” The technology may be different, but the benefits of working for Amazon are the same. Amazon fulfillment center jobs typically pay on average 30 percent more than traditional retail jobs, which don’t include the stock grants and healthcare full-time Amazon employees receive.
“I am honored and pleased that Amazon recognizes our streamlined business development efforts, prime location and resources available to meet the demands of their fulfillment center,” said city of Tracy Mayor Brent H. Ives. “Amazon is a wonderful addition to our economic base and will provide hundreds of jobs for residents of Tracy.”
Last month Amazon announced plans to build a 1 million-square-foot state-of-the-art fulfillment center in Robbinsville, New Jersey with future plans to build two more centers in the state. Amazon also announced last month it would spend over $100 million to open a 1 million-square-foot fulfillment center in DuPont, Washington.
